Amazon Just Changed Their Algorithm (And Nobody Noticed)

Hey, it's Yonah from Amazon Growth Lab.

Two weeks ago, Amazon quietly rolled out a major algorithm update. No announcement. No warning. But the data doesn't lie.

And it's changing everything about how products rank.

What Changed (And Why It Matters)

After analyzing ranking data across 1,200+ SKUs, we've identified three major shifts:

  1. Review Velocity > Review Count: Products gaining 5+ reviews per week are now outranking products with higher total reviews but slower velocity.

  2. Click Depth Matters More: The number of pages shoppers view within your listing now has 3x more impact on ranking than time on page.

  3. Question & Answer Activity: Listings with recent Q&A activity (within 30 days) saw an average ranking boost of 17%.

This explains why some of our clients suddenly jumped 5-10 positions while others dropped—despite no changes to their listings or PPC.

How To Capitalize On This Update

The brands winning right now are focusing on engagement metrics, not just sales metrics. Here's what's working:

For review velocity: Implement a two-step email follow-up sequence using Amazon's Request a Review button, timed at 7 and 14 days post-delivery.

For click depth: Add navigation links between your images and A+ content sections to encourage deeper browsing.

For Q&A activity: Seed 2-3 strategic questions monthly that highlight your product's key benefits, then answer them promptly.

One of our supplement clients implemented these changes and climbed from position #22 to #7 for their primary keyword in just 11 days.

The window to capitalize on this update won't stay open long. While your competitors are still figuring out what happened, you have the chance to make significant ranking gains.

Remember: Amazon's algorithm is constantly evolving. The sellers who detect these changes first always have the advantage.
